Odour & VOC testing

Innovation expertise – sensory & analytical

At Aqdot, we use our sensory expertise & analytical capabilities to support our customers with odour & VOC testing of their product developments with AqFresh™ technology.

Key support provided:

  • In-house sensory panel tests, including VDA-270
  • In-house GC analytical tests, including ISO 12219-2 and VDA-278
  • In-house in-vivo home use tests
  • Collaboration with external partners for clinical trials & other analytical capabilities

Sensory evaluation

Sensory evaluation

Panellists are asked to evaluate the odour intensity & tone using the rating scales.

Statistical analysis is carried out using Student’s t-test:
*** Highly significant p≤0.005; ** Very significant p≤0.01; * Significant p≤0.05; NS Not significant p>0.05

Sensory panel tests

Sensory panel tests

Aqdot uses its own externally validated and trained expert sensory panel to assess the odour intensity of a product with its own or an external malodour, with vs without AqFresh™. They are assessed on a standard scale from 0-6, as well as the hedonic tone when relevant.

For automotive interior materials, the VDA-270 standard industry test protocol is used.

The panel selection and training follow ISO6658 and ISO8586:2012. The test design follows ISO5495 or EN1375. The evaluation, interpretation and statistical analysis of the results follow ISO4121 and ISO 2854.

GC analytical tests

GC analytical tests

Aqdot follow a standard test protocol using gas chromatography to analyse the amount of residual VOC molecules (odours & pollutants) present in the headspace after treatment with the test formulation vs a control.

For automotive interior materials, the ISO 12219-2 and VDA-278 standard industry test protocols are used.

Results are reported as a % reduction in the intensity of malodour, with statistical significance.

In-vivo home use tests

In-vivo home use tests

Aqdot use their proprietary protocol for assessing products in-use, with self-evaluation of the odour by participants.

This enables use of real malodours such as urine, and testing under normal use conditions, to determine consumer acceptance.

It is typically used to optimise the dose of AqFresh™ and to determine odour reduction at different time periods, demonstrating the speed & longevity of odour reduction.
