AqFresh™ – A revolutionary molecular capture technology with malodour elimination, and smart fragrance release benefits

AqFresh™ Pure is the next generation of host-guest chemistry delivering unrivalled malodour elimination, prolonged ‘smart fragrance’ capabilities, as well as pollutant (volatile organic compounds) and anti-allergen benefits. With no environmental or human health warnings, AqFresh™ Pure is already in-market in a deodorant brand, for instance, and can add value in formulations in most Personal Care product categories.

The patented AqFresh™ Pure technology was developed at Aqdot® in Cambridge UK by a team of scientists and innovators. This unique technology is made of pumpkin-like shaped molecules, cucurbiturils, named after Cucurbita, the Latin word for pumpkin. AqFresh™ Pure is the next generation of cosmetic chemistry, able to act as molecular capture and release technology leading to consumer noticeable benefits. AqFresh™ Pure contains a mixture of cucurbit[n]urils (n =6, 7, 8) and each homologue has affinity for a variety of molecules. Thus, AqFresh™ has exceptional capability to bind a wide spectrum of molecules with different sizes and functional groups.

AqFresh™ Pure is chemically and thermally stable. The AqFresh™ Pure complexation mechanism is highly application versatile. Consequently, it works in powder and liquid form and is effective at highly diluted concentrations. This combination of attributes enables it to work as a revolutionary 5-IN-1 technology, capable of delivering the following benefits: 1) odour elimination, 2) anti-pollution, 3) smart fragrance delivery, 4) antiallergen and 5) antiviral.

Focus on Odour Removal:

AqFresh™ Pure has shown excellent odour removal in a wide range of pH formulations. Therefore it has no need for any masking fragrance. It has proven to be effective against human, food, bathroom, pet and other household smells. AqFresh™ Pure is compatible with most ingredients found in personal care products including surfactants, emulsifiers, enzymes, polymers and fragrances. Moreover, it delivers instant odour counteraction and long-lasting effects. AqFresh™ Pure has been effectively formulated in deodorant products to remove body odours. Also, AqFresh™ Pure has been incorporated into permanent hair dyes formulations to significantly reduce the “ammonia-like” odour during use.

Vehicle Indoor Air Quality (VIAQ)

Today’s key automotive interiors trend is an increasing focus on removing in-car air pollution in the form of VOC emissions from textile & polymer materials.

79% of consumers experience malodours in their car, according to an Aqdot survey of over 500 global consumers in US, UK, FR, IT, CN. Common bad smells in cars include petrol/diesel, body odour and stale air in AC/car vents, but also plastic/leather ‘new car smells’.

86% say that malodour negatively affects their mood, and since the Covid-19 pandemic, 69% are now more concerned than ever about indoor air quality.

VIAQ legislation

Malodorous VOCs affecting VIAQ is not just an issue of customer satisfaction, but increasingly many countries are introducing guidelines or legislation.

China has introduced legislation on the level of VOCs permitted: “Limit of harmful substances of vehicle coatings – GB 24409-2020”

VDA-270 Test

Aqdot run their VDA odour test using trained assessors selected according to ISO 8586 for their ability to discriminate and describe malodour. The assessors are trained & assessed quarterly using validated polymeric standards provided by a qualified supplier.

The panel follows the VDA 270 and ISO 4121 tests to evaluate the impact of our odour eliminating technology. The panellists evaluate the odour intensity using the scale from 0 to 6 (not detectable to extremely strong odour). They also evaluate the hedonic tone from -4 extremely unpleasant to +4 extremely pleasant.

AqFresh™ IAQ molecule capture technology

AqFresh™ has been proven to capture the 8 key VOCs found in automotive interiors. These are acetaldehyde, acrolein, benzene, ethylbenzene, formaldehyde, styrene, toluene and xylene.

This 2D-3D video explains its unique chemistry, results and applications:

AqFresh™ 3D video – automotive interiors – our molecule capture and release technology – improving indoor air quality.

Bad smells are usually caused by Volatile Organic Compounds (or VOCs), found in everyday products like textiles & plastics in new cars. Many VOCs are common indoor air pollutants that are toxic to humans and pets.

AqFresh™ is a revolutionary new 5-in-1 molecular capture and release technology removing odours, pollutants, allergens & viruses whilst delivering prolonged fragrance release.

Our patented technology utilises Cucurbiturils. Cucurbiturils have a symmetrical structure with a hollow hydrophobic cavity and polar portals, enabling them to tightly bind a wide spectrum of molecules with different sizes and functional groups.

AqFresh™ has been proven effective in a huge range of indoor air quality applications. When tested on textiles used in car interiors, it has been proven to capture and significantly reduce odour and other VOC emissions enabling high-VOC materials such as PVC and PU and other commercially available coatings to meet the industry standard VDA-270 C3 test.

It has proven efficacy against a broad spectrum of malodours, including faeces malodour reduced by 72% compared to a leading competitor technology’s 6%. With applications in all indoor spaces, AqFresh™ has been proven to reduce air pollutants including formaldehyde by 69% from the EU lowest concentration of interest (LCI) equating to a reduction from 40% above to 57% below the WHO limits, and a broad range of toxic VOCs including BTEX by up to 99%. Cucurbiturils also have the capability to bind  sulphur oxides, nitrogen oxides and other common pollutants.

AqFresh™ captures VOCs from PVC & PU for improved Vehicle Indoor Air Quality (VIAQ)

Tackling Vehicle Indoor Air Quality (VIAQ) is a key priority for the automotive interiors industry.

79% of consumers experience malodours in their car. As well as the obvious sources such as poor ventilation, fumes and body odour, a key problem cited by car users is the leather and plastic smell especially from new cars. According to an Aqdot survey of over 500 global consumers in US, UK, FR, IT, CN, 86% say that malodour negatively affects their mood, and 69% are now more concerned than ever about indoor air quality.

Malodorous VOCs affecting VIAQ is not just an issue of customer satisfaction, but increasingly many countries are introducing guidelines or legislation. For example, China introduced the GB/T 27630-2011 “guideline for air quality assessment of passenger cars” in 2012. This guideline covers testing methods and maximum automotive interior emissions. It is expected to become a legal requirement for M1-class vehicles (passenger models with up to eight seats).

The VDA odour test is run by Aqdot using trained assessors selected according to ISO 8586 for their ability to discriminate and describe malodour. They are trained & assessed quarterly using validated polymeric standards provided by a qualified supplier.

The panel follows the ISO 4121 and VDA 270 tests to evaluate the impact of our counteractant. The panellists evaluate the odour intensity based on the scale from 1 to 6 (not detectable to extremely strong odour). They also evaluate the hedonic tone from -4 extremely unpleasant to +4 extremely pleasant.

AqFresh™ IAQ molecule capture technology

AqFresh™ captures VOCs from PVC & PU. This odour capture technology can be added to automotive interior materials like PVC and PU to capture odours, VOCs and other pollutants. The intended result is improved Vehicle Indoor Air Quality.

This patented technology consists of cucurbiturils: barrel-shaped molecules with a hydrophobic cavity and polar portal. Their unique structure enables exceptionally tight capture & binding of unwanted molecules.

AqFresh™ has been proven to capture the 8 key VOCs found in automotive interiors. These are: acetaldehyde, acrolein, benzene, ethylbenzene, formaldehyde, styrene, toluene and xylene.

AqFresh™ is available as powder which has been successfully demonstrated to reduce the malodour VOC emissions of materials made from PVC and PU.

Consumers want home care products that offer improved wellbeing & mood

Many consumers have been spending more time at home due to the pandemic lockdown. This trend looks set to continue as anxiety over Covid-19 and its many variants remains high, and many plan to work from home for at least a few days a week on a permanent basis. They see their home as a safe space where they can shield from viruses & air pollution.

Consumers have broadened their personal hygiene & household cleaning routines, with many buying surface sanitising sprays like Procter & Gamble’s Microban and home air purifiers like Dyson’s Pure Humidify & Cool for the first time for example. They also want to de-stress in their homes, seeking home care products to enhance their mood, such as household cleaning products with premium fragrance scents (usually only found in premium personal care brands) launched by brands like Unilever’s Love Home and Planet with exotic fragrances like honey-tinged Bulgarian Rose entwined with Brazilian Murumuru.

Indoor air quality affects wellbeing & mood; consumers are increasing anxious about it

A recent study1 showed that household aerosols are more polluting than cars.

The Aqdot 2021 air freshener survey of 500 consumers in UK, US, France, Italy and China revealed that 69% of consumers are more concerned about indoor air quality since the Covid-19 pandemic. And whilst Carbon Monoxide is the most well-known pollutant of concern, other toxic substances of concern include aerosols which emit VOCs and formaldehyde which occurs from off-gassing – the process by which certain new household products made from wood or rubber give off the toxic gas.

But pollutants are not the only cause of consumers’ concern over poor indoor air quality. Many households nowadays have at least 1 allergy sufferer – as many as 71% of US households for example. 50% of UK households have at least one person with an underlying health condition at higher risk from Covid-19.

Common household malodours, as well as being pollutants of concern, affect not just the quality of indoor air from a health perspective but in terms of mood & wellbeing. 86% of consumers say that smelling malodour affects their mood – especially those who are most concerned about indoor air quality. This is particularly the case in China where the majority say that malodour affects their mood a great deal.

Our survey revealed that different malodours give rise to different negative emotions. Human smells (urine, vomit, flatulence, sweat, excretions) and Rotting Food smells (fish, rotten egg, milk, cheese, cooking fat) make people nauseous and distracted when working from home, whilst Tobacco & Environmental smells (mouldy, stale, musty air) are more likely to make them feel irritated or stressed.

Interestingly, Cooking Food smells (garlic & spices) negatively affect the mood of the Chinese the most. Oderase, the UK’s only fragrance-free air freshener brand, launched its Open Plan Living Odour-Erasing Spray in 2019 to appeal to consumers who dislike strong spicy cooking smells like curry from wafting from their kitchen to other rooms of the house.

A pleasant fragrance in the air has a positive effect on the mood & wellbeing of consumers

Having a fragrance in the air that you like has been shown to have positive emotional, behavioural and health effects on the household.

In the Aqdot survey, 86% of consumers said they had experienced one of these benefits, the most common one being “improved wellbeing due to breathing in cleaner air”, especially in the UK and USA, suggesting an association in our minds between a fresh scent and the perception of cleanliness.

In China, the key benefit experienced was improved concentration, productivity, and mental health whilst in France & Italy, the key benefit was having more energy. Other benefits cited include improved sleep, creativity, more harmonious relationships, greater romance & intimacy and even better-behaved pets!

The concept of an air freshener spray that could remove not just odours, but also pollutants, allergens and viruses, appeals to the vast majority of consumers

If a non-toxic spray was developed that safely removes odours, allergens, pollutants & viruses from the air, as well from pets, soft furnishings, fabrics & surfaces, and was available on Amazon for £2.99 for 300ml (ie. 50% more than the regular leading brand price in leading UK retailers at the time of writing in June 2021), 79% of consumers would be likely to buy it. This innovative concept appeals to a wide range of consumers but particularly strongly to allergy sufferers, dog owners and those who regularly shop for perfume. Over 88% of Febreze, Glade and Airwick air freshener spray users would buy it. It is clear that there is a real demand for multi-benefit home air sprays to tackle the problem of poor indoor air quality. Allergens, pollutants and viruses all pose a threat to consumers’ wellbeing in their homes and an air freshener spray is an ideal way of tackling them, but a new technology is needed that does not only capture malodours but these other home invaders too.

The benefits of such a new technology would not be limited to the home. Indoor air quality is a concern to consumers when they are out of home in public indoor spaces. 77% of UK consumers experience bad smells in their cars and most people wish that public toilets smelled fresher. In June 2020, over 70% of Brits regularly using buses, pubs, shops & gyms said they were concerned about the possibility of catching Covid 19 from airborne transmission in those indoor spaces. Whilst vaccines look set to boost consumer confidence in returning to the high street, most still want the best possible Covid-safe premises.

In Aqdot’s 2021 survey, consumers were asked about the idea of developing an automated spray in such places to help improve their indoor air quality and make them safer & more pleasant. If a busy indoor public place (eg. office, shop, café, train, etc), or a friend or relative’s home, had automatic sprays that periodically sprayed a non-toxic, fine, odourless mist into the air proven to safely capture & neutralise odours, allergens, and pollutants, 75% of consumers would be more likely to go inside.

Allergy sufferers, those who prefer fragrance-free products and those most concerned about indoor air quality would find this innovation most helpful.

Consumers want longer-lasting fragrance than their current AF delivers

Fragrance-free products are a growing trend as allergies are increasingly prevalent, and natural clean label products are increasingly sought after. Consumers are divided on the topic of the intensity of fragrance they want from their air freshener spray but more prefer a fragrance-free or lightly fragranced air freshener (51% overall, rising to 66% in China) and fewer (14%) prefer a strongly fragranced one.

Even more important than fragrance intensity is fragrance longevity. In the Aqdot survey, consumers were asked for how long they can / would like to smell the scent from their usual / ideal air freshener after spraying once. 81% of Americans said the scent of their air freshener lasts <1hour but 57% would like it ideally to last >1 hour (33% >3 hours). 75%+ top 4 brand users (Air Wick, Febreze, Glade, Yankee Candle) said the scent of their air freshener lasts <1 hour but 55%+ would like it ideally to last >1 hour (35%+ >3 hours).

But why is a long-lasting fragrance important to consumers? The top 2 reasons given were that it’s convenient as the user doesn’t have to keep spraying repeatedly and because they prefer a lasting scent instead of a short intense burst of fragrance that soon disappears. For some it’s about providing the emotional benefits (mood, sleep, concentration etc) for longer and for others it’s important that they can smell the aroma every time they walk into the room. Given the growth of continuous air fresheners and smart home innovation such as Miele’s Auro ambient smart hood, it is clear that there is an opportunity for air freshener brands to address consumers’ desire for long-lasting aromatherapy fragrance benefits: air fresheners that make you feel good.

Aqdot’s AqFresh™ 5-in-1 molecule capture & release technology offers long-lasting fragrance by controlling & prolonging the release of fragrance molecules over time

AqFresh™ has been proven to release preloaded fragrance molecules slowly over time for a prolonged sensory experience.

When AqFresh™ was added to a leading brand air freshener spray at just 0.5%, it was proven in blind expert panel sensory testing under laboratory conditions to provide a positive sensory fragrance experience that lasted for several hours. And its impact on prolonging the fragrance impact was phenomenal:

The addition of AqFresh™ to a leading air freshener spray provided up to 2x stronger fragrance intensity several hours after spraying than without using AqFresh™. When additional malodour was introduced after several hours, the air freshener with AqFresh™ was much more effective at reducing the malodour. It does this through molecular exchange – capturing malodour molecules and releasing fragrance molecules. In the laboratory tests, when malodour was introduced, it activated the AqFresh molecules that were still present in the room after several hours, which captured the malodour and released the fragrance. This malodour-activated release of an extra intense burst of fragrance, was measured as a significantly higher fragrance intensity than using the leading air freshener spray without AqFresh™.

When formulated into a simple fragrance-free air freshener for gas chromatography testing, AqFresh™ was proven to give a 93% reduction of urine malodour (TMA), whilst the leading air freshener brands included in the test made no significant reduction in the malodour.

Aqdot’s AqFresh™ 5-in-1 molecule capture & release technology removes odours, pollutants, allergens and viruses.

AqFresh™ (INCI: cucurbiturils) is the next generation of host-guest chemistry where its unique supramolecular structure enables capture of a wide spectrum of molecules:

  1. Eliminates a wide range of odours human, food, bathroom, pet & many others.
  2. Captures pollutants including formaldehyde, benzene, smoke and cleaning chemicals.
  3. Inactivates protein allergens found in pollen, dust mite, cat and dog dander.
  4. Neutralises viruses safely (including Sars-Cov-2 and Norovirus) without killing human cells so can be used in air and on pets, clothing, fabrics and soft furnishings

Consumers want a tailored fragrance experience

Our survey revealed that consumers want different fragrances on different occasions:
for example: lavender for going to sleep because it’s relaxing; citrus fruits whilst working, exercising or cleaning because it makes you feel happy & invigorated; vanilla for a romantic night in because it makes you feel loved, cosy & cocooned; and freshly baked bread during mealtimes.

They also want different fragrances in different indoor spaces: lavender / ocean spray in their bathroom; lavender / vanilla in their bedroom; citrus fruits / freshly baked bread in the kitchen; cotton fresh / vanilla in the living room; and ocean spray to freshen stale air in the AC or car vents in their car.

Of course, consumer preferences for different fragrances vary by country. The most popular scents to have in one’s home include: lavender (US), coffee (Italy/China), coconut (France), and cotton fresh (UK).

Webinar Description:

AqFresh™ – A revolutionary molecular capture technology with malodour elimination, antipollution, smart fragrance release benefits and more

AqFresh™ Pure is the next generation of host-guest chemistry delivering unrivalled pollutant (volatile organic compounds) and malodour elimination capabilities whilst concurrently delivering prolonged ‘smart fragrance’, anti-allergen and antiviral benefits. With no environmental or human health warnings, AqFresh™ Pure is already in-market in a deodorant brand and can add value in formulations in most Personal Care product categories.

The patented AqFresh™ Pure technology was developed at Aqdot® in Cambridge UK by a team of scientists and innovators. AqFresh™ Pure is made of pumpkin-like shaped molecules, cucurbiturils, named after Cucurbita, the Latin word for pumpkin.

The AqFresh™ Pure complexation mechanism is highly application versatile and works in powder and liquid form and is effective at highly diluted concentrations. This combination of attributes enables it to work as a revolutionary 5-IN-1 technology, capable of delivering the following benefits: 1) odour elimination, 2) anti-pollution, 3) smart fragrance delivery, 4) antiallergen and 5) antiviral.

Odour Removal:
AqFresh™ Pure has shown excellent odour removal in a wide range of pH formulations without the need of any masking fragrance. It has proven to be effective against human, food, bathroom, pet and other household smells. AqFresh™ Pure is compatible with most ingredients found in personal care products including surfactants, emulsifiers, enzymes, polymers and fragrances. AqFresh™ Pure delivers instant odour counteraction and long-lasting effects. AqFresh™ Pure has been effectively formulated in deodorant products to remove body odours. Also, AqFresh™ Pure has been incorporated into permanent hair dyes formulations to significantly reduce the “ammonia-like” odour during use.

Antipollution:
AqFresh™ Pure has been validated as a powerful anti-pollutant technology. Effective against a variety of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are hazardous to human health including formaldehyde, BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes), smoke and cleaning chemicals.

Smart fragrance delivery:
AqFresh™ Pure delivers pro-fragrance benefits with formulation flexibility.  AqFresh™ Pure can be formulated into products with fragrances and perfumes to give a longer lasting experience and improved hedonic tones. The fragrance release can be accelerated by a variety of triggers including malodours. AqFresh™ Pure can deliver a unique fragrance experience to consumers by releasing fragrance molecules upon capture of malodours in deodorants and/or air fresheners.  AqFresh™ Pure could revolutionise the need for polymeric fragrance release technologies.

Anti-allergen:
AqFresh™ Pure has proven to be exceptionally effective at inactivating protein allergens found in pollen, dust mite, cat and dog dander. AqFresh™ Pure complexes with amino acids and peptides, key components of proteins. Allergens proteins are responsible for the subsequent allergic reactions. AqFresh™ Pure prevents the allergen proteins recognition by the antibodies that would otherwise lead to an allergic response.

Antiviral:
Protein complexation is a well-known mechanism to inhibit viruses. AqFresh™ Pure has demonstrated strong efficacy against enveloped viruses such as vaccinia virus as well as difficult non-enveloped ones such as murinenorovirus, herpes simplex and a SARS-CoV-2 pseudovirus without affecting the cell, indicating a novel and safe mode of action different to currently available biocidal technologies. The development of antiviral benefits is ongoing. AqFresh™ Pure is not registered as a biocide and is not cytotoxic.

AqFresh™ Pure is not persistent or hazardous to the environment or human health and has been awarded the Cradle to Cradle Platinum Material Health Certificate. AqFresh™ is certified REACH 100 mT and has LVE 10 mT for TSCA and China.

Aqdot, the Cambridge, UK based supramolecular company, is moving into the Italian market after agreeing a partnership with Specialities to distribute its patented Air Quality technology, AqFresh™, throughout Italy.

The technology consists of ‘cucurbiturils’ – barrel-shaped molecules – which are highly effective at capturing volatile organic compounds and malodour molecules.  These undesirable molecules are quickly attracted to AqFresh™, removing the malodours and pollutants from the air.

Besides molecular capture, the AqFresh™ technology can be used to release fragrances slowly or can concurrently capture malodours while releasing fragrances and thus enhancing the final user experience. It can also be formulated into a product that to neutralize the most common household allergens including pollen and cat dander.

Formulations of AqFresh™ have been extensively tested to meet consumer product standards in the European Union, North America and Asia and have shown no toxicity to human cells. The absence of toxicity indicates lower risk to skin contact or inhalation. This allows for a wide range of applications in which traditional chemicals cannot be deployed.

BIOBAX & AQDOT enter a license and supply agreement that will see AQFRESH formulated into ZYBAX, the environment-friendly biological professional cleaning brand

Aqdot, the Cambridge-based supramolecular chemistry company, has partnered with Biobax, owner of the UK-based environment-friendly biological professional cleaning brand Zybax, to provide the technology behind the innovative new Zybax Advance air freshener alongside the development of their existing range. Removing tough lingering obnoxious malodours is a key challenge for the professional cleaning industry. Most available solutions are based on using high levels of artificial chemical perfumes to temporarily mask the malodour or to use a slow-acting germ-killing solution both of which don’t give the truly fresh result that is needed for instant and lasting freshness.

The new Zybax Advance with AqFresh™ air freshener utilises Aqdot’s patented supramolecular chemistry AqFresh™. It is a novel and versatile performance chemistry that is exceptional at capturing, holding and releasing materials; in this case capturing malodour molecules and eliminating them from the air. AqFresh™ also enhances Zybax Advance’s subtle fragrances of either fresh mint or fresh linen.

With strong sustainability credentials AqFresh™ has achieved a Platinum Material Health Certificate (MHC), which is the highest possible certification level. Biobax plans to use the product within their formulations to sell the product with distinctive Zybax branding through major UK distributors and to promote it from its new corporate website.

Tim Wright, CEO of Aqdot, said: “We are delighted to be working with Biobax, to enable them to further develop the innovative Zybax product range with the launch of Zybax Advance. Our own launch of AqFresh™ has been well very received by customers, enabling them to license the unique, high performance AqFresh™ technology, which we also supply at large scale.”

Kate Pawson, Sales & Marketing Director at Biobax, said: “BioBax and our brand Zybax will be including the new ingredient AqFresh™ as part of our formulations. The licence and supply of the AqFresh™ chemistry to Biobax gives us a great opportunity to continue to innovate with the best in the market and opens up exciting opportunities for future products. Watch this space for our new products containing AqFresh™!”

Aqdot, the Cambridge-based supramolecular chemistry company, has partnered with Mayborn Group, owner of award-winning, global baby brand Tommee Tippee®, to provide the technology behind the innovative new Tommee Tippee® nappy odour neutralising spray for the baby market.

As all parents know, the smells created when nappy changing are not a nice experience. The challenge is that parents don’t want to use artificial or strong fragrances around their baby to get rid of bad smells.

The new Tommee Tippee® nappy odour neutralising spray utilises Aqdot’s patented supramolecular chemistry Aq™Bit. It is a novel and versatile performance chemistry that is exceptional at capturing, holding and releasing materials; in this case capturing malodour molecules and eliminating them from the air. It is so effective that there is absolutely no need for any masking fragrances. Aqdot has achieved a Platinum Material Health Certificate (MHC) for AqBit, which is the highest possible certification level. This demonstrates that all of the chemical ingredients of a product are optimised towards safer materials.

Mayborn plans to sell the product with distinctive Tommee Tippee branding through major retailers and its own new e-commerce site. It will sell alongside the top-selling Tommee Tippee Nappy Bins and Twist & Click Refill system.

Aqdot is starting to grow fast in the license and supply of its patented technology and is extending its openness to partnerships with other businesses to use the unique, high performance Aq™Bit technology.

Tim Wright, CEO of Aqdot, said: “We are delighted be working with Mayborn, to enable the company to use our unique chemistry to further develop its product range.

“To be working in partnership with a globally known brand is a significant achievement for Aqdot and something of which we are rightly proud.”

Oderase, the first and only fragrance-free, odour erasing bathroom spray in the UK market made by Aqdot, has been awarded the prestigious Cradle to Cradle certification at the Silver level based on an impartial and independent evaluation of the product’s Material Health, Material Reutilisation, Renewable Energy, Water Stewardship and Social Fairness. The assessment was conducted by MBDC, the original creators of the Cradle to Cradle Design™ framework.

Oderase is a fragrance-free odour erasing bathroom spray, leading the next generation of air fresheners. Now available on Ocado in the UK and slated to make it to the United States, its simple and water-based formulation contains Aqdot’s patented odour-eliminating technology Aq™Bit, which captures bad odours and erases them from the air.

This makes Oderase different from other air fresheners because it is so effective at erasing bad odours that it does not need to contain any masking fragrances. Oderase is sold in a pump action, propeller-free aerosol spray with up to 500 spritzes per bottle.

The product has already been endorsed by the independent testing organisations Allergy UK and the Good Housekeeping Institute.

The Cradle to Cradle Certified™ Product Standard – administered by the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute – provides a continuous improvement pathway toward the development of quality products. With an overall product certification at the Silver level, Oderase demonstrates advanced work across all five attributes and will continue to improve and innovate as clearly proven with its Platinum level reached under the Material Health attribute.

Aqdot also recently achieved a Platinum Material Health Certificate (MHC) for AqBit, the core technology underlying Oderase and other Aqdot products, including AqStar™ M1, a high-performing emulsifier for personal care products.

“Creating safe and sustainable products is vitally important to Aqdot and to have Oderase independently certified by Cradle to Cradle is very rewarding,” said Dr Jing Zhang, co-founder and Marketing Director of Aqdot. “We were supported by MBDC to achieve the Silver level for Oderase, in addition to the Platinum level MHC for AqBit and AqStar M1. We will continue to improve and innovate to ensure that all our products reach the same high ethical standards.”

Cradle to Cradle Certified™ is becoming an international “gold standard” science-based quality certification, which acknowledges continuous improvement and innovation of products and processes towards the goal of being not just “less bad” but also “more good” for people and the planet.

“The science behind odour technology management can be challenging, as we would rather not mask a scent by adding chemicals to the air that may have harmful side effects,” said Jay Bolus, President of MBDC. “The Oderase product achieves this with its innovative formula, leaving behind no chemicals with potentially negative impacts to human health or the environment. This is what Cradle to Cradle certification is all about: creative innovation and adding value to the world of design & manufacturing, all while giving consumers and industry the safety, comfort and inspiration to create more good.”

Aqdot Achieves Cradle to Cradle Platinum Material Health Certificate

Aqdot, the Cambridge, UK-based supramolecular chemistry company, has achieved a Platinum level Material Health Certificate (MHC) for AqStar™ M1, an exciting, flexible solution to the formulators’ quest for high-performing emulsification systems that are aesthetically distinctive.

A naturally-derived alternative to synthetic ingredients, AqStar M1 is both ISO 16128 and non-genetically modified and provides the formulation flexibility to produce a wide range of oil-in-water emulsion formulations for hand, face, and body products with characteristics of water-in-oil performance. With distinctive aesthetics, AqStar M1 offers consistent and easy coverage on the skin with no stickiness, glossy oil-in-water emulsions, and formulations that flow but do not drip. The formulations dispense well from pumps, airless pumps, tubes or bottles, some can even be sprayed.

Tim Wright, CEO of Aqdot, the supramolecular chemistry company that brought AqStar M1 to the market, said: “The unique properties of AqStar M1 have already generated significant interest given the opportunity it creates to formulate new cosmetic products from a naturally-derived emulsifier. We are confident that we can positively disrupt the cosmetics market with an emulsifier that gives manufacturers a naturally derived alternative to synthetics that works exceptionally well.”

AqStar M1 accommodates polar and non-polar emollients of any Hydrophile-Lipophile Balance (HLB) requirement, as well as challenging aqueous ingredients (including extracts and preservatives) across a wide pH range. It also produces highly stable formulations with high levels of inorganic pigments and particulates.

Aqdot has worked closely with MBDC, the original creators of the Cradle to CradleDesign™ framework to assess the ingredients and processes used by Aqdot in creating AqStar M1. The MHC, issued by the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute, uses the material health assessment methodology of the Cradle to Cradle Certified™ Product Standard to demonstrate that companies know the chemical ingredients of every material in a product and optimise towards safer materials. The Platinum level of certification represents the highest level of the Material Health Certificate.

“With AqStar M1’s achievement of a Platinum Material Health Certificate, we are continuously demonstrating a commitment to offers products that enable our customers to introduce differentiated brand while making a truly positively impact on the environment,” added Wright.

“Oftentimes we’re faced with what we call ‘regrettable substitutions’ in the beauty and cosmetics industry and beyond, because we don’t always know the effects alternative chemistries will have on humans or the environment,” said Jay Bolus, President of MBDC. “By assessing Aqdot’s formula and process for AqStar M1 with such depth, we’re able to rest assured that there won’t be any harmful byproducts at any time of use. This ingredient will truly change the cosmetics industry with their abilities to maintain the desired function that manufacturers want for their products, while also giving consumers the guarantee that they won’t be exposed to harmful ingredients.”

Core to Aqdot’s technologies and products, AqBit has the potential to be game-changing in a wide range of industries, including odour and volatile organic compound management, personal care, industrial chemicals, agrochemicals, and pharmaceuticals. Products incorporating AqBit will enable customers to introduce novel and differentiated brands and make a positive impact on the environment.

Tim Wright, CEO of Aqdot, said: “Aqdot is very proud to have achieved the Platinum Material Health Certificate for AqBit. The Cradle to Cradle Certified Products Program is a valuable third-party, independent endorsement of Aqdot’s sustainability credentials and a significant milestone in the development of our technology and products. We are proud to reaffirm our commitment to safe and sustainable products, and we will continue to build on this in the future.”

The MHC, issued by the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute, uses the material health assessment methodology of the Cradle to Cradle Certified™ Product Standard to demonstrate that companies know the chemical ingredients of every material in a product, ensuring that no substances in the formula are a risk to humans or the environment during manufacturing, use or end-of-use, and that the company has committed to optimizing toward safer materials. The Platinum level of certification represents the highest level of the Material Health Certificate.

“Oftentimes we’re faced with what we call ‘regrettable substitutions’ in the chemical industry and beyond, because we don’t always know the effects alternative chemistries will have on humans or the environment,” said Jay Bolus, President of MBDC. “By assessing Aqdot’s formula and process for AqBit with such depth, we’re able to rest assured that there won’t be any harmful byproducts at any time of use. This ingredient will truly change the chemical industry with their abilities to maintain the desired function that manufacturers want for their products, while also giving consumers the guarantee that they won’t be exposed to harmful ingredients.”

Aqdot is delighted to announce the launch of Oderase, a unique odour-erasing spray for bathrooms.

Oderase is the first and only fragrance-free odour erasing bathroom and household spray in the UK market. It is sold, through Ocado, in a pump action, non-propellant-driven spray of 100 mL. at £4.99. Each bottle contains up to 500 spritzes.

Oderase is different from other air fresheners because it is so effective at erasing bad odours that it does not contain any fragrances. Further, thanks to the scientific breakthrough of successfully suspending the active ingredient in water it can be totally fragrance free, non-toxic and doesn’t need to use a propellant to be sprayed effectively. The technology really opens up the market for disruption both in zero and light fragrancing options for air fresheners.

Tim Wright, CEO of Aqdot ltd, said: “Our scientific team has made a significant breakthrough with this new technology, which enables materials to be captured, held and released in a way that no other chemistries can. It has wide applications, including removal of odour and volatile organic compounds from the environment, personal care and life sciences. This unique technology has now been made available to those Ocado customers who want to ensure that their homes are free from unpleasant odours. It works instantly and does not present the alternative smells associated with fragrance-based air fresheners. We have delivered a safe, non-toxic product in a pump spray container which is proven to be effective.”

He added: “We are pleased that Oderase has been independently approved by the Good Housekeeping Institute and Allergy UK, which will give consumers confidence in the veracity of the product and be borne out by successful sales.”

Aqdot Closes £2.55m Funding Round

Aqdot a specialist chemical company originally spun out of Cambridge University, with a focus in intelligent encapsulation, has completed a £2.55m oversubscribed funding round.

The round was led by Touchstone Innovations, alongside Cambridge Enterprise, Providence Investment Company and Parkwalk Advisors. Due to the potentially significant environmental benefit of the technology, the company has also been supported by Climate-KIC, receiving approximately €135,000 through different Climate-KIC funded initiatives.

Aqdot will use the funds to further develop and commercialise its platform encapsulation technology. The company’s proprietary technology, originally developed at the University of Cambridge, enables valuable active products to be protected, delivered and chemically programmed to release where and when required.  The technology can be game changing in a wide range of sectors including oil and gas,  pharmaceuticals and household products.  It enables customers to introduce novel and differentiated brands, reduce manufacturing costs and make a positive impact on the environment.

As an illustration, in biological laundry products enzymes are a vital part of the ‘cleaning power’.  Currently the enzymes are substantially destroyed by other detergent components before use. By encapsulating the enzymes, in Aqdot’s “AQ-wash” product, it is possible to protect them and programme them to release only at the start of the wash. This reduces the amount of enzyme and detergent needed for a wash cycle and enables a lower temperature wash, resulting in significant carbon dioxide reduction.

Aqdot Closes Funding Round

Tim Wright, CEO at Aqdot, said:

“The continued support from our seed investors and interest from new investors demonstrates the robustness of our technology and underlines the rapid progress Aqdot is making. This funding round enables us to continue to innovate and develop our products in parallel while taking the first wave through to commercialisation. I am grateful to former CEO John Hamlin and the Aqdot team for making this possible.”

Kelsey Lynn Skinner, Director Technology Ventures at Touchstone Innovations, said:

“We are proud to lead this round of investment alongside top-notch co-investors. Aqdot is a perfect example of high quality science leading to novel products, with many potential benefits to industry and society.”

Global University Venturing: Imperial leads by Gregg Bayes-Brown, 12 December 2013

Imperial College London’s tech transfer unit Imperial Innovations (II) has led a seed round worth nearly £1m ($1.6m) for Cambridge University spin-out Aqdot.

II, which invested £350,000 of the total, was joined in participation by the university’s own tech transfer unit Cambridge Enterprise as well as investors Parkwalk Advisors and Providence Investment Company. As part of the deal, Kelsey Lynn, director at II, will join the Aqdot board of directors.

Aqdot is developing chemical encapsulation technology which allows tiny droplets to carry active materials, such as cleaning enzymes for detergents and agrochemicals for crops. Funds raised by the seed round will be used to further develop Aqdot’s technology as well as securing new partnerships.

Roger Coulston, co-founder at Aqdot, said: “Instead of licensing to industry, we decided to form a company and to commercialise the technology through active industry engagement. We chose as funding partner Imperial Innovations because of their experience and insight in building high-growth companies based on academic research. We look forward to creating early value with this disruptive and novel technology through a number of partnerships in different industry segments.”

Cabume: Rising star Aqdot by Lautaro Vargas, 11 December 2013

A year old startup pushing a new encapsulation technology with the potential to disrupt a range of industries from farming to big pharma is gunning for early revenues through major partnerships following a £1 million seed fundraising round.

Aqdot Ltd spun out of Cambridge University’s Department of Chemistry at the end of 2012 to further a technology with the ability to enclose materials in capsules between 10 and 100 micrometres in diameter, while accurately controlling both the capsule structure and the core content.

Beyond being quicker than existing industry techniques, this ‘one-step’ process also allows for a far more controlled release of the microcapsule contents through a range of different stimuli, whether it’s drugs in the body or sealants in aircraft construction.

The company has generated a lot of interest including national broadsheet newspaper coverage and has won several business plan competitions from Cambridge University’s own CUE awards to a €20,000 European venture competition.

Having decided to build a company rather than just sell licenses, Aqdot now plans to use the money to ramp up development of the technology and grow new partnerships in its selected markets.

The appeal of the spin-out road for Aqdot lies in its belief that its technology is suitable for pretty much the entire micro encapsulation industry, a $40 billion opportunity that covers oil and gas, paper, textiles, pharma and medicine, adhesives, household and personal care, food and paints and coatings.

The company will need to have more focus early on, but says its Investors – who are Imperial Innovations, Cambridge Enterprise, Parkwalk Advisors, and Providence Investment Company – leave it well placed for rapid growth

Imperial Innovations’s Kelsey Lynn, who has joined the Aqdot board of directors, says there is already interest from a variety of large corporates and believes a company can emerge that can change the landscape of controlled release functionality in encapsulation.

She said: “Aqdot benefits from a wealth of research undertaken at one of the world’s leading chemistry departments,” adding, “We are excited to be involved with the company at this early stage in its development.”

Imperial Innovations is also supplying the company’s launch CEO in Dr John Hamlin, its own Entrepreneur-in-Residence who has 25 years of experience in senior business and technology positions in BP Chemicals. Aqdot has also recruited as chairman, Dr Peter Fields.

“We chose as funding partner Imperial Innovations because of their experience and insight in building high-growth companies based on academic research,” said Aqdot co-founder and CSO, Roger Coulston. “We look forward to creating early value with this disruptive and novel technology through a number of partnerships in different industry segments.”

Business Weekly: Thanks a million by Kate Sweeney, 10 December 2013

Imperial Innovations has invested £350k and led a new seed funding round of almost £1 million ($1.6 million) into Aqdot Limited.

Cambridge Enterprise, Parkwalk Advisors, and Providence Investment Company joined Innovations in the investment round.

The funds will be used to further the development of the Aqdot technology and partnerships with companies in the selected markets.

Aqdot has developed a proprietary and disruptive chemical encapsulation technology that enables extremely tiny droplets to be produced to carry ‘active materials’: for example cleaning enzymes used in domestic detergents, and agrochemicals for crop treatment.

The high stability and robustness of the droplets allows for a finely controlled release of the contained ingredients while using much less encapsulation material than traditional products.

In addition to giving value to producers and consumers, the reduction in wasted active materials also yields significant environmental and sustainability benefits.

The company is engaged with a number of interested corporate partners across a variety of industries and is prioritising opportunities in home care, personal care, nutraceuticals and agrochemicals.

The science that underpins Aqdot technology was developed at Cambridge University Department of Chemistry under senior academics Professor Chris Abell and Dr Oren Scherman, both of whom join Aqdot’s Scientific Advisory Board.

Aqdot successfully closes seed funding round – Touchstone Innovations Business LLPc (AIM: IVO, ‘Innovations’), a leading technology commercialisation and investment group, has invested £350k and led a new seed funding round of almost £1 million ($1.6 million) into Aqdot Limited. Cambridge Enterprise, Parkwalk Advisors, and Providence Investment Company joined Touchstone in the investment round.

The funds raised in this round will be used to further the development of the Aqdot technology and partnerships with companies in the selected markets.

The Cambridge University co-inventors Dr Jing Zhang and Dr Roger Coulston join the company as Director Operations and Chief Scientific Officer, respectively.

The Engineer: Team plans faster production – The Engineer

Stephen Harris, 14 February 2012

Technology for more controlled drug delivery could be produced hundreds of times faster than with existing methods thanks to new research.

Scientists at Cambridge University have developed a faster process for manufacturing microcapsules — tiny spheres filled with drugs, pesticides or other substances — that also enables more precise control over when their contents are released.

The researchers have used microfluidics — where chemicals are combined in tiny sub-millimetre channels — to create droplets of a mixture that spontaneously assembles into capsules. These can then be broken down with light, heat or changes in pH.

‘Microfluidics has a very high frequency of generating those droplets and therefore capsules,’ PhD student Jing Zhang, lead author on the research, told The Engineer.

‘Currently I’ve only been doing a frequency of 300 to 3,000 droplets per second but it could go up to 100,000 droplets per second easily.’ Conventional methods produce around a couple of hundred microcapsules per second, she added.

Microcapsules are used to slowly release drugs inside the body, disperse pesticides over crops, add flavours or nutrients to food and even to release sealants in manufacturing processes.

The shell of the capsules either degrades over time or is broken down mechanically to release the contents. But the capsules produced through Cambridge’s method are more susceptible to other stimuli and so the release can be coordinated.

This could be particularly useful in manufacturing complex structures such as aircraft, where sealants usually need to be applied to parts one small area at a time to ensure a precise enough fit, said Zhang. ‘Potentially we could apply a signal and all the glue would be released in one go.’

C&EN: Easy Route to Microcapsules – Chemical and Engineering News

February 13, 2012 (p37)

Researchers at the University of Cambridge have used supramolecular host-guest chemistry to fabricate cargo-carrying microcapsules from microfluidic droplets in a single step (Science, DOI: 10.1126/science.1215416). Oren A. Scherman, Chris Abell, and coworkers chose cucurbit[8]uril as the host molecule because it can form a ternary complex with two guests—in this case, methyl viologen attached to gold nanoparticles and a naphthol-containing copolymer. The researchers combined individual solutions of the three components in a microfluidic device to form a single aqueous phase. The oil phase shears droplets off the aqueous phase at a T junction. As the oil phase carries the droplets through a winding channel, the components combine to form hollow micro capsules consisting of a dispersion of gold nanoparticles in a polymer mesh held together by cucurbit[8]uril. The size of the microcapsules ranges from 10 to 24 μm and varies with the ratio of the oil and aqueous flow rates. The researchers can load a variety of cargo—such as drugs, biological molecules, and even cells—in the microcapsules by adding a fourth solution to the aqueous phase during fabrication.

Cambridge University Research News: “Smart” microcapsules – Cambridge University Research News

11 February 2012

A new, single-step method of fabricating microcapsules, which have potential commercial applications in industries including medicine, agriculture and diagnostics, has been developed by researchers at the University of Cambridge. The findings are published Friday (10 February) in the journal Science.

The ability to enclose materials in capsules between 10 and 100 micrometres in diameter, while accurately controlling both the capsule structure and the core contents, is a key concern in biology, chemistry, nanotechnology and materials science.

Currently, producing microcapsules is labour-intensive and difficult to scale up without sacrificing functionality and efficiency. Microcapsules are often made using a mould covered with layers of polymers, similar to papier-mâché. The challenge with this method is dissolving the mould while keeping the polymers intact.

Now, a collaboration between the research groups of Professor Chris Abell and Dr Oren Scherman in the Department of Chemistry has developed a new technique for manufacturing ‘smart’ microcapsules in large quantities in a single step, using tiny droplets of water. Additionally, the release of the contents of the microcapsules can be highly controlled through the use of various stimuli.

The microdroplets, dispersed in oil, are used as templates for building supramolecular assemblies, which form highly uniform microcapsules with porous shells.

The technique uses copolymers, gold nanoparticles and small barrel-shaped molecules called cucurbiturils (CBs), to form the microcapsules. The CBs act as miniature ‘handcuffs’, bringing the materials together at the oil-water interface.

“This method provides several advantages over current methods as all of the components for the microcapsules are added at once and assemble instantaneously at room temperature,” said lead author Jing Zhang, a PhD student in Professor Abell’s research group. “A variety of ‘cargos’ can be efficiently loaded simultaneously during the formation of the microcapsules. The dynamic supramolecular interactions allow control over the porosity of the capsules and the timed release of their contents using stimuli such as light, pH and temperature.”

The Food Navigator: One step microcapsules – The Food Navigator

Nathan Gray, 10-Feb-2012

An innovative new technology platform could provide manufacturers and food formulators with greater control and speed when producing encapsulated ingredients such as flavours and bioactive ingredients, say its developers.

The new technology – a single-step method for producing ‘smart’ microcapsules using fluid droplets – is said to have potential commercial applications in food, nutrition, and pharmaceuticals, among others. Developed by researchers at the University of Cambridge, UK, and published in prestigious academic journal Science, the team behind the new technology promises that the ‘one-step’ microcapsules offer several advantages over currently used techniques.

Speaking with FoodNavigator.com, Dr Oren Scherman from the department of chemistry at Cambridge explained that the fluid technology used by the new platforms means that microcapsules have little variation in terms of size, and are “highly reproducible and scalable.” “I think that the fundamental advance that we have taken is the ability to both formulate the capsule and encapsulate cargo in a single step, so all the molecules and components are dynamically assembled simultaneously,” said Scherman, who was one of several researchers from the University of Cambridge involved in the platform’s development.

“We have on demand capability for release, and you can also have whatever you want as far as capsule size, or cargo, all in a uniform structure,” he said, noting that he was sure that there was “a lot of opportunity within the food manufacturing and production domain.”

“Because it’s a platform technology, it has a lot of applicability to many diverse areas, and I think that is something we are keen to explore through contact current leaders in the field,” added the expert.
